The Birth of Yesterday Papers
Welcome one and all to Yesterday Papers. This site is designed to add spice to a subject that some people seem to find unpalatable: History. For those who enjoy history’s stories, it is our hope to add to your enjoyment by adding depth to those stories as well as to view them in context with other contemporary events.
We’ll be doing so through the use of vintage newspapers.
Today’s newspapers present tomorrow’s history. Likewise, yesterday’s papers can shed new light on today’s history books through reports published within days or hours of the events taking place. We believe there is something about reading an exact newspaper account of an event on the day the ink dried that is much more exciting than reading an account of the event in a history book written decades or centuries later.
No matter how well they are written, modern historical narratives are filtered – be it intentionally or merely subconsciously – by the personal views, prejudices, editorial standards, and the like, of today’s writers, editors, and publishers. The emphasis on “political correctness” over the past several decades has also filtered out content that in many cases is essential for understanding the actions of earlier generations. In the case of textbooks, the local school system’s textbook review and selection board may determine which version of history will be taught.
We will be covering interesting events from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. At times our focus will be quite broad yet at other times, very narrow. At all times, however, we hope you will find this site to be enjoyable.
We welcome your comments and suggestions as we hope that communication through this site will be two-way.
Now, lets step into our imaginary time machine for a look at our past…
